Blue Xmas

I had afternoon tea on a bright Sunday afternoon before Xmas in Shibuya with a buddy I used to work with. We went to a cafe that has robots standing next to the tables for entertainment. I've been there a couple of times before. They have pretty good pancakes. But since this is the last weekend before Xmas, the cafe was fully booked til the evening. There were a few disappointed people who got turned away. Good thing we had reservations.

Gotta give the Japanese credit for fine presentation of food. The tea was adorable. The little bears used were marshmallows. Not only was the tea adorable, the food was good, too. With the exception of the pink cone thingy. We didn't like that one very much. The cone was salty for some reason. Salad was half an avocado with marinated onions and tomatoes. The sammich was salmon and cream cheese. There was a scone with strawberry jam and thick cream. We also had a pistachio macaroon, chocolate cake, raspberry mousse, panna cotta, and an ice cream parfait.

We had the robots entertain us while we were enjoying our tea. The robot sang and dance to the songs we chose from the menu. It had an English menu, but the songs were sung with a Japanese accent. So weird hearing Jingle Bells supposedly in English but sung like a Japanese child would. We giggled throughout the song when we had the robot perform Gungnam Style.

We wanted to see the blue lights at a park in Shibuya but we had a few hours to kill, so we wandered around the malls. It's amazing how much time can pass by when you're looking at all the weird stuff displayed at shops in Shibuya. I got a vid of theworld's busiest crosswalk and a panorama view from the 14th floor. There was a Xmas market being held there. The items being sold were cute, but the prices were way too bougie for our tastes. $40 for a pair of socks? Uh, no thanks!

It was going to get dark soon, so we headed to the park and hopefully find a cafe to sit down and have a coffee before the lights come on. Sadly, all we could find that still had seats available was a fast food joint. All the other cafes were packed to the brim and some even had lines snaking outside. Well, we weren't there to eat anything there since we were going to find somewhere with decent food.

The blue lights came on at 5pm on the dot. The last day of the blue lights display was Xmas day, and this was the last weekend before Xmas. We expected a bigger crowd, but it wasn't as bad as we thought it would be. The blue lights were so pretty! There was a globe at the end of the pathway that displayed a snowman, but also an ad of a pasta brand that appeared to be a major sponsor of the blue light event. Never knew they had a sponsor. But then, someone has to pay for the power bills. LOL

After the park, we headed off to find a place for dinner. We passed by a shopping mall with a bunch of restaurants in the basement. I knew of a really popular burger place, but there was an insane line snaking outside the restaurant. My buddy found a smash burger place tucked away in the corner away from the crowd. We decided to have a burger there and it was pretty good. They cover the burger with cheese while it's still on the grill so the melted cheese gets nice and crispy around the edges. The burgers are topped with homemade ketchup and a sauce made out of pickles and sour cream. It was mighty tasty. I'm not actually a fan of pickles, but the sour cream mellowed the pickles. She made a good choice. I'd definitely would go there again if I'm in the area.

Have any good burgers lately?
