Day trip 20240209 Ashikaga Flower Park

Japan saw another 3-day weekend in February. I decided to save Monday as a rest day and start taking day trips on Friday night since I wanted to go see light shows this time around. The lights at the flower park is one of the most well-known winter illumination shows.

I got myself another 3-day train pass, booked seats on express trains, and got advance tickets before I went to the park. The light show starts after dark, so the timing was perfect going after work. I had to change trains part way to get on a local train. That's cool since I like to get the chance to ride different trains.

The park was much smaller than I thought it would be, so it didn't take long to get the lay of the land. I went through and enjoyed the lights in the various themes, and since these displays start from late November, of course, there's a Xmas-themed section. The park boasts a 150-year-old wisteria tree, which attracts viewers from all over Japan and tourists visiting Japan.

The lights were so pretty. I was awed, especially the ones made to look like wisteria. I went around the park about twice, enjoying every minute until closing time. The train back was pulling in soon after closing time, so it was perfect.

One thing I like about express trains that I ride til the last stop is that I can totally pass out without worrying missing my stop. Plus, I can ride in comfort.

    1. I've never been to the park in spring, but the photos I've seen of the wisteria when they're in bloom is pretty spectacular, too.

  2. We don't have many illumination shows here for some reason.

    1. Back in the bubble era, lots of people went all-out on Xmas decorations and lighting, so much so that they attracted gawkers from all around, disrupting the neighborhoods. While that craze died down in personal homes, especially after the bubble burst, theme parks adopted the concept to attract visitors during the colder months. There are even bus tours to visit parks after dark when light shows are offered.

    1. When mine start blooming, then the nearby park should start, too. Not sure if I'm going to take a day trip to Ashikaga during wisteria season.
