Western coast rocks

Mother Nature decided to give the folks over on the western coast a jolt on New Year's Day.

New Year's in Japan is like Xmas in the West. People travel for family gatherings. Many people leave the countryside for work and school and travel back to where they grew up over the extended holidays.

On New Year's Day, the western coast of Japan was hit by earthquakes, one reaching a magnitude of 7.6 and tsunami warnings were issued. Even the anchors at news stations were panicking while sending out warnings for people living near the ocean to evacuate to higher grounds. I could hear a lot of yelling in the background while the anchors were relaying the news.

Several strong tremors were recorded in a short span of time. So far five fatalities, 30 buildings collapses and a few fires have been reported. Some places are without running water or working phone lines right now.

I live over on the eastern side of Japan, so I'm safe from any ill effects of the earthquake.

Prayers to all those affected by such devastation.
